Everyone knows the name Courvoisier. Napeoleon knew it nearly two centuries ago, and we all know it now. Unlike some other famous brands, Courvoisier deserves its name and reputation. Priced extremely reasonably, Courvoisier VS is one of the few VS-level cognacs out there that’s really worth drinking on its own, rather than using it for cooking and mixing. Ranging around $25 for 750ml, its cheap enough for an everyday drink, but has a smoothness and flavor on level with the VSOP’s of a number of other makers. Subtle flavors are subdued, unsurprising for a VS, but the smooth delivery and delightful finish makes this one of the best buys for the price. (more…)
Fussigny’s XO is a Grande and Petite Champagne blended cognac. It consists of at least 50% Grande Champagne eau-de-vie. A. de Fussigny’s distilling methods are traditional. The humid cellars of A. de Fussigny are ideal for aging cognac, as they are situated by the banks of the river of Charente, in the cognac region. This kind of storage enhances aromas to where they are supposed to be, giving this cognac a fine and exquisite taste. Like all other Fussigny Cognacs, the A. de Fussigny XO Fine Champagne is aged either in Tronconnais casks or Limousin oak barrels.
Tasting notes: Fussigny XO is a perfect balance of dry fruits, spices and light hazlenut, and some floral notes.
The cognacs used to make Fussigny XO are aged an average of 25 years resulting in the perfect balance between dried fruits, spices, hazelnut and some floral notes. A rich and elegant palate with hints of plum and licorice.
We haven’t reviewed Courvoisier Exclusif Cognac, but the company states:
“The only cognac designed specifically to be mixed, Courvoisier Exclusif Cognac is a well matured blend, aged up to twelve years, from the four finest crus, the Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Fins Bois and Borderies. The grapes, picked at their peak of maturity, give Exclusif its complexity and depth of gingerbread, dried plums and coffee notes. ”
